Here as promised is my recording of The New Deal's Ithaca show at Castaways, a small but rather neat little club right on the inlet to Cayuga Lake. I myself am not a fan of The New Deal per se, but I'd heard another live recording of their music, and decided to check out their Ithaca show. About 15 minutes of the first set is missing due to a misunderstanding. After having our gear hooked up to the sound board well in advance of The New Deal's appearance, another taper and I were informed by the sound crew - only after the performance had begun - that off-the-board taping would not be permitted at this show. That meant that I had to dash back to my car, get my tripod and microphone, and set back up pretty much from scratch. Despite this unexpected complication, it was a good time and I got a good recording. My mic was set on a tripod, roughly 2 feet above head-level, to the right of the sound board, mic pointed at the band. (I'm not entirely sure if the sound man was mixing to mono or stereo). No sound processing was applied except for a 35-Hz-and-below roll-off to eliminate woofer-threatening subsonics without diluting the bass response. Since I'm not that familiar with the band's music, I took an educated guess as to how to divide the program up into tracks. My sincerest apologies to all of you for any mistakes. Oh yes, it was a hell of a show! Lineage data follows. Marantz PMD-660 flash recorder, linear PCM mode (44.1 Khz, 16-bit) using Sony ECM 929LT stereo microphone set to 110-degree stereo spread. > direct download to hard drive > Adobe Audition (filtering and tracking) > FLAC level 8, align on sector boundaries > YOU, the listener! THIS RECORDING IS FOR TRADE AND DOWNLOAD ONLY. IT IS NOT FOR SALE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. IF YOU BUY BOOTLEG CD'S, YOU ARE GETTING RIPPED OFF. If you wish to convert this program to MP3 for use in an Ipod or such similar appliance, that's fine. PLEASE DON'T DISTRIBUTE IT IN THAT FORM.
